Christopher Columbus's Childhood

Christopher Columbus grew up in a coastal town called Genoa in Italy. His father was a cloth merchant and wanted Columbus to follow in his footsteps, but Columbus had other plans, he wanted to explore the oceans. Later on his life Columbus was in a shipwreck on the coast of Lisbon, Portugal. Here he met his wife and mother of his children Donna Felipa. Her father was a sea captain/navigator and he began to teach Columbus about maps and the ocean.

Introducing Christopher Columbus

Christopher Columbus

Son of Domenico Colombo and Susanna Fontanarossa Christopher Columbus was born in 1451 in the Republic of Genoa, Italy. He began sailing as a teenager participating in several trading voyages in the Mediterranean and Aegean seas so it was no surprise when he became a world renowned Explorer and Navigator. Columbus went on many voyages around Africa which almost cost him his life. We recognise Christopher Columbus the most for his discovery of America on the Santa Maria, with the Pinta and the NiƱa along side. Like most famous people from the Renaissance Columbus kept a diary which we have translated into many languages so we now know his thoughts and opinions on his travels.
